WU-TANG x ENTER THE DUBSTEP

It was only a matter of time before an actual collab happened between a major rapper(s) and the dubstep world.

"The project serves a double purpose as well: many of the pioneers and practitioners (DJ’s and producers) in the Dubstep world came up in a time when Wu-Tang ruled the international airwaves. Unlike much commercial hip-hop, the immediacy of Wu-Tang’s sound spoke to many outside of the scope of the typical hip-hop fan, across oceans and at home. Their music and stylehelped to shape an emerging artform that hadn’t yet defined itself. Now, in 2009, as dubstep continues to grow, expand and encompass more styles and subgenres, the Wu-Tang sound is reintroduced into the mix, to spawn a new and unique musical crossbreeding, that is greater than the sum of its constituent parts."

Some dubstep producers involved are Trillbass, DZ, Datsik, and Stenchman working with of course the RZA, GZA, Raekwon, Method Man, etc. etc. with guest spots from MF Doom, Busta Rhymes, and Three 6 Mafia. I don't really know how I feel about this, but as far as I'm concerned Wu-Tang doesn't waste time on bullshit and the producers they've worked with are solid in my book.

The release is set for November. This is a big step for dubstep, at least in America.

A nice bootleg of Dead Prez's "Hip Hop" by HD4000.

TOMBA x CHOKE ON COKE

Tomba is another dubstep producer out of Tel-Aviv. Similar to his friend Borgore, his music sounds like a giant ball of aggression. If I'm not mistaken, Tomba and Borgore were/are both in the same metal band, Shabira. Check out a tune I came across as well as the previews on his MySpace.

BROKEN NOTE

The dubstep genre has been getting even heavier, heavier, and HEAVIER just this past year. People are pushing the limits of just how low the bass can get and how chaotic they can push it. I don't remember the last time I've felt so much aggression build up just from listening to music. Broken Note out of the UK is the perfect example of said music.

If I'm not mistaken, these dudes are also the dudes from 16Bit. Broken Note, in my humble opinion, seems to be a similar project but sounds to be more influenced by drum n' bass. Chest-pounding bass, evil basslines, and the intense atmospheric noises will either have you turning on all the lights in the house and/or starting a riot on the dance floor.

Their debut full length "Terminal Static" was released last week on Adnoiseam Records and if the album cover isn't enough for you to go buy it, then hopefully the track below will. This is the best "dubstep" release of the year so far.

AC SLATER x JOKER x GTRONIC

As you've probably noticed, I've been on a pretty massive dubstep kick lately. Which is awesome because I love sub bass more than life. However as a DJ, the truth is that unless you've got a room full of bass-obsessed people who share the same love for dubstep, you're going to get mixed reactions and a lot of confused faces when dropping certain tracks.

I can't speak for those living overseas of course or probably for those of you out in LA or NY. However, I'm currently located in the dirty South where dubstep is still a very foreign thing - so this post will be focused more on "dancefloor friendly" tracks.

AC Slater remixes are pretty much always a go-to. I have no idea who "The Grand National" are, but this remix is catchy and contains a very low bassline that flows throughout the song. Pretty chill, nothing too crazy but definitely a track I wouldn't think twice about dropping.

[DL] The Grand National - By The Time I Get Home (AC Slater Remix)

More dubstep producers such as Joker have been remixing more popular groups such as Simian Mobile Disco who've just released their 2nd full length Temporary Pleasures. You know you're getting into some funky melodies with a Joker track - I like this one a little more than the rest.

[DL] Simian Mobile Disco - Cruel Intentions (Joker Remix)

GTRONIC is one of few producers I've been following closely. He definitely has a signature sound and has gotten play and support from acts like The Bloody Beetroots. He's got that raw, straight-to-the-point bass synth that sticks out amongst the sea of weak, half-assed basslines. This song is hard as nails and perfect to drop at the peak of a party to take the intensity to the next level.

CHROMEO x SKREAM x KID SISTER x CASPA

Here are a couple of new remixes of fairly new singles by two of the biggest names in dubstep, Skream and Caspa. These tunes are... well... different. They don't exactly set a dark mood that a lot of dubstep I usually post on here does, but I never deny good music. It's always interesting to see a genre in a different form.

The Chromeo remix will most likely be bumped as loud as possible on my way to the grocery store. Windows down!

EMALKAY x WHEN I LOOK AT YOU

Fucking FINALLY!!!!!! Emalkay's "When I Look At You" is the biggest dubstep release of the year, or dare I say ever? It'll be available this Monday, the 5th. Pay for this. I order you. I have never in my life listened to a 1:30 long preview so many times before. I haven't been this pumped for a release in too long and it feels good. Okay enough talk, peep some older Emalkay tunes below and don't forget to cop a copy of one of the biggest hyped (for good reason) songs of the year.

VASKI x WORLD ON FIRE

Finally! I've noticed that there have been more quality dubstep producers coming out of the US recently. It was only the other day I found out who Minnesota native VASKI was. His "World on Fire EP" was digitally released a few days ago on Rottun Recordings home to heavy hitters such as DZ, Excision, Datsik, and etc. whom I've been posting a lot lately.

"
Vaski's latest work portrays the thoughts of many on current world events. Economy crashes and drawn-out wars paint a bleak world where dark sounds are accepted and preferred. This release features a sinister take on traditional club bangers, and features songs that everyone will come to recognize. If you like the sounds of "Resonate" and "You Wouldn't Understand," then World on Fire EP will surely get your head bouncing and your feet moving."

The description is correct and this is one of my favorite releases of the year. Dark, catchy melodies that lead into low, crunchy basslines. Solid, solid release. Check out the song and be sure to pick up the rest of the EP. Don't overlook this!

BASSNECTAR x COZZA FRENZY

San Francisco's BASSNECTAR's new full length album dropped this past Tuesday and you need to check it out. I feel that Bassnectar is in his own little world when it comes to bass heavy music combining all elements of dubstep, grime, and hip-hop, making for very interesting, fun, and high-energy party tunes. Though he does have a lot of IDM-influenced, glitchy tracks that are more on the ambient side - the album as a whole flows very nicely and definitely makes my top list for the year. Be sure to check out the tracks below and pick up the whole thing!
